National Fish n Chip Day...that's dinner sorted!
by Real Wrap Friday, 2nd of June, 2017

It’s National Fish ‘n’ Chip day, and it happens to fall on Fish Supper Friday this year! This meal is so quintessentially British, there could be a BBC programme on it, but what makes our favourite fried dish so popular? We have had a look into the history of the famous fish supper, and here are our favourite facts!

  1. We have been battering and frying fish ever since the 17th century. However no one paired their fish with their fried potatoes until 1860…at which point there was no turning back!
  2. Oldham, Manchester is said to be the home of the first fish ‘n’ chip shop.
  3. There are nearly 11000 fish ‘n’ chip shops in the UK. Meaning wherever you are, you are sure to be able to find one nearby, phew!
  4. 1 in 10 of the UK’s potato crops get made into the mighty chip, that’s a fair few french fries…
  5. It is estimated that we eat over 382 million portions of fish ‘n’ chips each year. That nearly equates to 1 portion every 12 seconds

So whether you like them dredged in vinegar or with a dash of lemon, we hope you enjoy your fish supper tonight!
